Welcome to our new blog series! #WednesdayWords is all about igniting inspiration and producing new writing based on engaging prompts.
So, without further ado, this week’s prompt is:
I couldn’t believe it, after all these years – you! It was you from the very start.
As this is a deliberately ambiguous sentence, you can really make it your own. It could be part of the romance genre – the speaker could be happy due to an unexpected reunion. Equally, this could be the start (or end) of a thriller: the words could be shouted or even whispered with fear.
I’ve included my own idea from the prompt as an example:
I couldn’t believe it, after all these years – you! It was you from the very start. You don’t look exactly as you did, back when I thought I last saw you in the summer of ’78: corkscrew curls and ocean blue eyes. Your eyes are tear-stained blue now and your hair is wiry grey. But it was your smile that struck me, I could never forget it – vacant and cold; the antithesis of welcoming. Your smile, yes, it’s just the same all these years later. I’d ask how you found me here, why you’ve been following me for months and what it is that you want – but I already know: my hand in marriage.
Feeling inspired? Why not send us your own response to the prompt?
